The RIAA has been dominating the record industry for a while now, most large record companies have complete control over promotion, branding and distribution of all new artists.
Amazon has decided to change all that…
Amazon recently announced
that it is partnering with a European startup called SellABand
and will sell music from their artists. The approach Sellaband uses to promote artists is by allowing them to host their music on their website. Fans are allowed to listen to their music and if they feel like donate $10 to the group. Once the total donations cross the $50,000 mark the band gets to record a CD in a professional studio.
When this happens each fan gets a copy of a limited edition CD, if for some reason they aren’t selected the money goes back to the fans, or they can choose to “invest” in another artist.
To date, more than 6,000 artists have uploaded music to the site, and a very select few who managed to cross the $50,000 mark have been awarded the opportunity to record an album. The top artists will now have their music sold on Amazon UK as well, making the model even more attractive.
